Set to the beat of Social Lovers’ track “Can’t Get Enough,” Casablanca’s SS25 collection took the runway, sharing its title with the show’s infectious soundtrack. The show transported us to ’90s LA, showcasing lowrider cars and Chicano influences in the styling and design. Charaf Tajer’s vision for this season was deeply rooted in these vibrant subcultures.
Tajer paid homage to Mexican-American culture through his designs, with Helena’s styling enhancing the aesthetic. The combination of slides and loafers paired with long white socks, shirts buttoned only at the top, and bandanas tucked into waistlines evoked classic Chicano tropes.
The collection opened with striking blazer dresses and oversized suits, smoothly transitioning into elevated sportswear. Models graced the runway in satin baseball shirts, a distressed knitted basketball jersey, and an unbuttoned jumpsuit reminiscent of a used wetsuit. The skateboard and surfboard props underscored the LA beach sport theme, further immersing the audience in the collection’s narrative.
In my opinion, the styling of the menswear and androgynous looks felt more intentional than that of the womenswear, showcasing a deeper exploration of character and narrative. The standout pieces were primarily from the menswear collection; however, the bedazzled pinstripe closing look undeniably stole the show, captivating the audience with its striking detail and craftsmanship. This fusion of menswear and feminine elements not only highlighted the versatility of the Casablanca brand but also underscored Charaf Tajer’s distinct vision for this season.
Despite the strong cultural influences, none of the designs felt gimmicky; Tajer expertly merged these elements with Casablanca’s signatures of relaxed silhouettes, bold colours, and luxurious fabrics. “I could see the influence of bossa nova, of Charaf,” model Juliana Nalu remarked when asked about the collection. Ultimately, this collection was authentically true to him and served as a testament to the power of cultural storytelling in fashion. By weaving together influences from his background with the brand’s identity, Tajer not only honours tradition but also paves the way for future designers to draw from their roots while creating fresh and impactful collections.
